Spring Creek Beta Testing for Beachtek…

Author: Travis

Shooting with HDSLR's is no picnic. But the image they produce is worth the all the work arounds you are forced to endure. File format problems, compression/decompression issues and the worst of them all AGC. Automatic Gain Control, suffice to say that it renders audio out of these cameras USELESS. I've been shooting all my interviews for Spring Creek with two cameras and will have to synch the "good" audio recorded using a SONY HVR 1U to the video from my Canon 7D. In a few words, TIME CONSUMING! It doesn't make for quick or easy post.  There are other alternatives including the H4N, a handheld recording device, however since I am a one man band I can't look after recording seperate audio while I shoot. Even if I could, it would still have to be synched in post.  So I looked around for another work around and found Beachtek Audio Adapters. Beachteak builds the DXA-SLR, an active XLR adapter with built in preamplifiers and phantom power for connectin professional audio gear to any DSLR that has a mic jack. From the website " The DXA-SLR gives you everything you need to connect professional audio gear to your camera to capture superb sound.  The DXA-SLR is very easy to set up and use. The Good/Peak signal indicators show the ideal input levels at a glance while the headphone output lets you monitor what you are recording. The enhanced AGC Disable feature works even better at controlling the wild swings of the Auto Gain Control that plague most cameras. This dramatically reduce the noise during quiet moments of recording allowing you to record two channels of clean audio. You can also monitor the playback audio from the camera. Fits neatly under any camera and can also be mounted to a tripod. Operates on one 9 volt battery." I was looking on line at Beachtek's website about to order one from when I found out they are actually based right here in Kelowna, BC. I was stunned to find out Beachtek was just a few blocks away from my home, right next to my favourite sushi hang out. I called up Harry Kaufmann and asked if I could come down and take a DXA-SLR for a test drive.  Harry invited for a tour of Beachtek right away. I was totally impresssed with Harry, his Beachtek products.  I left with a handful of stuff that is going to make my shooting life ALOT easier! Beachtek as a ton of stuff coming down the pipeline for the DSLR market and Harry is going to have me do some BETA testing of Beachtek products as he rolls them out. Thanks to Harry and everyone at Beachtek. Check out the B&H Photo review of the DXA-SLR below, if you are an HDSLR shooter a Beachtek Adapter is a must have. More Later T>
